Presbyopia

Presbyopia is a condition where the natural lens of the eye loses it’s elasticity and the eye increasingly struggles to focus on near objects. The initial signs of presbyopia include difficulty seeing in dim light, eyestrain, and challenges focusing on small objects or fine print. Patients first start experiencing presbyopia in their 40s.

Patients can achieve the ability to see both near and far objects with minimal reliance on glasses by undergoing lens replacement surgery with multifocal intraocular lenses.

Cataract

A clouding of the natural lens in the eye is called a cataract. Usually, cataracts start to develop in patients after the ages of 40 to 50, but they can also be noticed in younger patients, mostly caused by trauma.

Humans have a natural lens in the eye that operates similarly to a camera lens, sending images to the brain. If the lens is clouded, patients experience vision regression, where images become blurred and bright colors appear dull. Patients may also experience increased difficulties seeing clearly at night.

Intraocular Lenses (IOLs)

Monofocal Intraocular Lenses (IOLs)

Monofocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) are artificial lenses implanted during cataract surgery or refractive lens exchange that correct vision at a single focal point, typically for distant vision. While they provide clear vision at one fixed distance (usually far), individuals may still require glasses for activities such as reading or viewing objects up close.

  • One distance (far, intermediate, near).

Multifocal Intraocular Lenses (IOLs)

Multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) are implants used during cataract surgery to address vision at multiple distances, allowing improved near and far vision. They contain different zones or rings with varied powers across the lens surface, reducing the need for glasses for various activities.

  • Near distance: approximately 40cm.

  • Intermediate distance: approximately 80cm.

  • Far: beyond 100cm.

Diagnostic Equipment for Cataract and Presbyopia Surgery

  • IOL Master

A non-contact optical biometer used for measuring axial length, corneal curvature, and anterior chamber depth. It is crucial for accurate intraocular lens (IOL) power calculations in cataract surgery.

    IOL Master
  • Pentacam

A diagnostic device that uses a rotating Scheimpflug camera to capture detailed 3D imaging of the cornea and anterior segment. It is essential for corneal topography, pachymetry, and detecting keratoconus.

    Pentacam
  • Galilei

The Galilei system combines two advanced imaging techniques—Scheimpflug imaging and Placido-disc topography. This dual approach ensures highly accurate measurements of the cornea and the front structures of the eye. It is widely used for corneal evaluations, refractive surgery planning, and understanding the eye’s overall optical quality.

Surgical Equipment for Cataract and Presbyopia Surgery

  • VERION by Alcon

An advanced image-guided system that improves the planning and execution of cataract surgery. It helps customize the procedure by mapping the eye, aligning intraocular lenses (IOLs), and ensuring precise outcomes tailored to the patient’s needs.

  • Centurion

A cutting-edge phacoemulsification system for cataract surgery. It provides enhanced precision and safety by automatically adjusting fluid pressure and optimizing lens removal for a smoother procedure and better outcomes.

    Centurion Alcon
  • LenSx by Alcon

A laser-assisted cataract surgery system that uses advanced femtosecond laser technology to perform key steps of the surgery with exceptional accuracy. It enhances precision for corneal incisions, capsulotomies, and lens fragmentation
